Claude Projects is one of the most underused features of Claude Pro. It lets you create dedicated workspaces with custom instructions and uploaded knowledge — turning Claude from a general assistant into a specialized expert for each area of your work.
What Are Projects?
A Project is a workspace with persistent context. You set custom instructions that apply to every conversation within that project, and upload documents that Claude can reference. When you start a new chat inside a project, Claude already knows your preferences, your terminology, and your reference materials.
Setting Up Your First Project
Create a project for each distinct area of work. A freelance writer might have: "Client A — Blog Posts," "Client B — Email Marketing," "Personal — Book Draft." Each project has its own instructions and reference materials.
In the custom instructions, include: your role and context ("I am a marketing manager at a B2B SaaS company"), output preferences ("Write in a professional but conversational tone, aim for 8th-grade reading level"), and specific requirements ("Always include a CTA at the end of blog posts, use data points from our Q3 report when relevant").
Uploading Knowledge
Upload documents that Claude should reference: brand guidelines, style guides, product documentation, previous work examples, research papers, or competitor analysis. Claude reads these and incorporates the information into its responses. For a client project, uploading the client's brand guide and past content ensures consistency.
Advanced Techniques
Template Projects
Create projects for recurring task types. A "Blog Post Writer" project with instructions about your SEO approach, content structure, and style preferences. Every time you start a new blog post, the conversation inherits all your preferences without re-explaining them.
Research Projects
For ongoing research topics, upload key papers and documents. As you discover new information, add it to the project. Over time, you build a knowledge base that Claude can draw from across conversations — like a research assistant with perfect memory.
Code Projects
Upload your codebase documentation, API specs, and coding standards. Claude generates code that follows your team's conventions, uses your existing utilities, and matches your architectural patterns. No more explaining your stack in every conversation.
Tips for Maximum Value
Keep custom instructions concise and specific — bullet points work better than paragraphs. Update instructions when your preferences change. Remove documents that are no longer relevant. Use descriptive project names so you can find the right workspace quickly.
The biggest productivity gain comes from not repeating context. If you find yourself typing the same background information in multiple conversations, that context belongs in a project.
