You do not need 15 AI subscriptions. You need the right 3-4 tools working together. Here is the productivity stack we use daily and how each piece fits together for under $60/month total.
The Core Stack
1. Claude Pro — The Brain ($20/month)
Your primary AI for anything that requires thinking: writing, analysis, coding, research, strategy, problem-solving, and creative work. Claude handles the tasks that require depth, nuance, and quality. This is where most of your AI interaction happens.
Use for: Drafting content, writing code, analyzing data, brainstorming, editing, summarizing documents.
2. Perplexity Pro — The Researcher ($20/month)
Your fact-finding and research tool. Anything that requires current, sourced information goes through Perplexity. Market research, competitive analysis, technical documentation lookups, news monitoring — Perplexity finds and synthesizes information faster than manual search.
Use for: Fact-checking, market research, staying current on industry trends, finding specific data points.
3. Notion (Free) + NotebookLM (Free) — The System ($0)
Notion organizes everything: projects, notes, databases, documents. NotebookLM turns your accumulated documents into a searchable, queryable knowledge base. Upload your research, meeting notes, and reference documents to NotebookLM, and you can ask questions across all of them.
Use for: Project management, note-taking, document analysis, knowledge management.
4. Cursor (Free tier) or GitHub Copilot Free — The Coder ($0-20)
If you write code, add Cursor or Copilot. The free tiers of both are sufficient for most individual developers. Upgrade Cursor to Pro ($20/month) if you code full-time and want Composer for multi-file features.
The Daily Workflow
Morning: Check Perplexity for industry updates relevant to your work. Review your Notion tasks for the day. Afternoon: Use Claude for your core creative and analytical work. Drop research findings into NotebookLM for long-term reference. Use Cursor/Copilot for any coding tasks. End of day: Use Claude to summarize what you accomplished and plan tomorrow.
Total Cost
Essential stack: Claude Pro ($20) + Perplexity Pro ($20) = $40/month. With Cursor Pro for coding: $60/month. Everything else in the stack is free.
Why This Combination Works
Each tool does one thing exceptionally well and does not overlap with the others. Claude thinks, Perplexity researches, Notion organizes, Cursor codes. No redundancy, no feature overlap, and each tool is best-in-class for its function. This beats paying for one "do everything" tool that does nothing exceptionally.
Start with Claude Pro alone if budget is tight — it covers the widest range of tasks. Add Perplexity when you find yourself spending too much time on research. Add Cursor when coding productivity matters. Build the stack based on your actual pain points, not aspirational ones.
